I wanted to show the "other side" of life - the side that gives voice to the people who are exploited by tourism and the side that gives people an understanding what comes from being kind to the locals. We rely on our local friends heavily to get around in other countries. They are the ones that show us the spots, keep us and our equipment safe, and teach us how to better ourselves by becoming enriched in their culture. What we have witnessed time and time again, is that people simply do not respect the places they travel, the cultures they see, or the locals they meet. As simple as it gets, when you travel, you are an ambassador for your country - when you are a visitor to someone else's home, be sure to show them the respect they deserve, you will be glad you did. A little over a year ago Sam and I decided we wanted to travel the world. We moved into a jankey apartment in the hood of Honolulu under the reign of an even sketchier landlord. We spent six months marketing the idea of Chasing Summer and people loved the idea, but we were only able to raise a couple thousand dollars. Fast forward to December. I checked my LinkedIn one day and see a message from the Director of Marketing at Activeon Action Cameras saying they wanted to hire me. We were within ten days of leaving for Japan and starting our three months route through Southeast Asia. I told them everything for Chasing Summer was set and there was nothing I could do - now, most companies would usually back off and find someone new but, Activeon, they are ambitious. They saw this as the best opportunity money could buy. Within five days of reading that message on LinkedIn, Activeon had written a check to fully support the three months in Asia - they saved our lives, literally. After we returned from Asia, Activeon hired me full time as their Content Production Manager. This company has flown me around the world for the last ten months - I literally could not be doing any of this without them. Undoubtably, the guys at Activeon have made this thing happen but, the people I truly want to thank as well are those who believed in us when we were nobody's - these were the people who willingly donated to a couple of kids with a dream. Their money went directly into airfare and committed us to a minimum of three months in Asia, and we could not thank them more. Our trip was partially supported by two companies who have been with us since the stone age, of all the companies I have worked with, these two have been the best. After graduating from University of Hawaii in 2015 our team knew that in order to make a living off adventure we would have to reach, and inspire, the toughest demographic of individuals - Generation Y. Generation Y, commonly referred to as Millennials, have grown up in an era where technology, advertisements and false realities thrive. Our future leaders are rapidly becoming desensitized to the real world and what it takes to follow one's dreams by the constant bombarding of irrelevant and useless information that we mindlessly scroll by on social media. The reason Generation Y is our target demographic is because we want to prove to them that the average individual can follow their dreams regardless of predispositions that may hinder one's faith in probable success. We are a group of average, middle-class individuals who have devoted our lives to diverting from life's normalities by blazing a new trail -- the trail we were meant to take. Life for me as a younger brother always meant watching older brother do it first to make sure it's possible. Seeing first-hand as my brother overcame something gave me the feeling of security and confidence when it was my turn -- and we believe that's what Generation Y needs in order to take the first step in following their dreams. If we are able to prove to them that any individual can take charge of their life and rewrite their destiny then maybe, just maybe, they'll get out of their comfort zone and take the first step to pursue the life they are meant to life.
